According to a new opinion poll, Noel Grealish may struggle to keep his Galway West seat

According to a TG4 Ipsos/MRBI poll released this evening, Galway West TD Noel Grealish will struggle to retain his seat in the Dáil while the Social Democrats and Green Party are projected to make a breakthrough and win a seat in Galway West.

Grealish has come under fire for claiming African asylum seekers were “economic migrants” who came to Ireland to “sponge off the system” as well as supporting the Government in Dáil votes including opposition confidence motions against ministers.

The poll also suggests danger for left-leaning Independent TD Catherine Connolly, while government chief whip and minister for the Gaeltacht, Seán Kyne is also in a fight to hold on. Kyne’s Fine Gael colleague, Hildegarde Naughton, is tipped to head the poll.

Catherine Connolly is put on 9%, Niall Ó Tuathail of the Social Democrats is on 12% and the Green Party’s candidate Pauline O’Reilly is on 10%. Sinn Féin’s Mairéad Farrell is on 7%, Niall McNeils from Labour is on 5%; the current Mayor of Galway Mike Cubbard is on 3%; while People Before Profit’s Joe Loughnane is on 2%.

For the poll, a total of 525 adults were questioned between last Friday and Sunday and the margin of error is estimated at plus or minus 4%.
